The Press Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, on July 25, 2026, received a petition from a concerned student alleging sexual harassment involving the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Treasurer, Comrade Sunday Olaoluwa, popularly known as Otunba Kaafaata.

The petition called for an investigation into the allegations and urged relevant authorities to take appropriate action if the claims are established.

According to the petition, the alleged incidents involved students of the Department of Social Development and have reportedly raised concerns about students’ welfare and the learning environment.

A source in the department, who requested anonymity, told the Press Council that several meetings had reportedly been held in an attempt to resolve the matter. The source alleged that efforts were made for the accused to apologise to the affected students but claimed that he did not accept responsibility for the allegations.

One of the alleged victims told the Press Council that the SUG Treasurer invited her to his office during the industrial action. She alleged that during the meeting, he made unwanted physical advances towards her, which she rejected and expressed displeasure about. According to her, he apologised and assured her that such behaviour would not happen again.

She further alleged that another unwanted advance occurred as she attempted to leave the office, prompting her to leave the building angrily.

The alleged victim also claimed that the incident was followed by attempts to damage her reputation by portraying her as someone who had threatened the SUG Treasurer.

The petition further alleged that the complaints involved multiple students, with allegations of serious sexual misconduct and other forms of sexual harassment. These claims have not been independently verified by the Press Council.

According to information gathered, the matter had previously been brought to the attention of the SUG President and the Head of Department in an attempt to reach an amicable resolution.

The concerned student has therefore called on the Polytechnic management, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Students’ Union Government to conduct a fair and impartial investigation and take appropriate action based on the outcome.

The Press Council has not independently established the allegations. The accused SUG Treasurer should be given an opportunity to respond before any conclusion is reached on the matter.
