The Press Council recently invited the 36th SUEC President, Comrade Emmanuel Ayomide Onile Mayowa, the SUEC Welfare Director Comrade Ogunlade Emmanuel, and other stakeholders to address growing concerns and mixed reactions among students over the alleged increase in the Students’ Union Government (SUG) transport fare charged by campus bikers.
The engagement followed widespread complaints from students who claimed that some SUG bikers had begun charging fares above the approved amount, leading to confusion and dissatisfaction across the campus community.
Speaking during the interview, the SUEC Welfare Director dismissed rumours that the Students’ Union Government had approved any increase in the transport fare. He explained that after deliberations with members of the executive council, it was resolved that the approved fare remains ₦200 per passenger.
According to him, representatives of the campus bikers had approached the union with a proposal to increase the fare due to the rising cost of fuel on the 8th Monday, June . However, the request was not approved because of its potential impact on students.
Comrade Onile noted that while fuel prices may fluctuate, approving a fare increase could place an additional financial burden on students, especially if transport charges are not reviewed downward when fuel prices decline.
He further revealed that he had advised the bikers to engage the Directorate of Student Affairs (DSA) if they wished to pursue any proposal for fare adjustment through the appropriate channels.
The Press Chairman, while responding to the concerns raised by students, advised the SUEC Welfare Director to republish an official notice clearly stating the approved transport fare in order to eliminate misinformation and ensure students are properly informed.
Speaking at the meeting, the SUEC Welfare Director urged students to remain calm while discussions with the bikers continue. He advised students to take photographs of the motorcycle and shirt number of any SUG biker who insists on collecting ₦300 instead of the approved fare and report such incidents to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
The Welfare Director further appealed to students to exercise patience, disclosing that a meeting with representatives of the SUG bikers was scheduled to hold later that evening to clarify the approved fare structure and address the concerns raised by students.
The executives assured students that the outcome of the meeting would be communicated through official channels and reiterated that, as of the time of the engagement, the approved SUG transport fare remained ₦200 per passenger.
