The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) on Monday, 8th of June 2026, commenced an accreditation exercise for nine departments and twelve academic programmes at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo.
The exercise attracted lecturers, non-academic staff, and students from various departments, including Mass Communication, Public Administration, and Science Laboratory Technology, Insurance,Banking and finance,Taxation, mechanical engineering, all of whom were fully prepared to meet the standards required by the NBTE assessment team.
Speaking during the exercise, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Olorunwa, described accreditation as a crucial process for ensuring that academic programmes meet the standards set by the regulatory body. He noted that any programme without accreditation would not be officially recognized.
According to the Rector, all necessary requirements for the exercise had been adequately provided with the support of the Ondo State Government. He expressed confidence that the institution would achieve a successful outcome.
Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication Studies, Dr. Rahman Abubakri, stated that the faculty was fully prepared for the accreditation exercise. He expressed optimism that the programmes under the faculty would receive favourable assessments from the NBTE team. He further assured students that previous graduates of the programmes had not encountered challenges regarding their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization.
Similarly, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Sunday Afolayan, emphasized that accreditation is essential for students, as it guarantees that their certificates will be recognized by the NYSC, government agencies, and other relevant institutions. He added that no institution can legitimately offer a course that has not been accredited by the appropriate regulatory body.
The NBTE team is expected to assess various aspects of the institution, including management effectiveness, academic staff qualifications, learning facilities, and equipment used in teaching, as part of the accreditation process.
The accreditation exercise is expected to continue in the coming days as the NBTE team proceeds with the assessment of the remaining affected departments and programmes.
