The ongoing accreditation exercise by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, entered another phase on Tuesday as assessment teams continued the evaluation of academic programmes and facilities across various departments.
Speaking during the exercise, the NBTE spokesperson, Dr. Oladimeji, explained that the purpose of the accreditation is to assess and validate the academic activities, resources, and programmes offered by the institution over the past two years. According to him, the exercise is designed to ensure that departments comply with the standards and guidelines established by the regulatory body.
He noted that the accreditation team carefully examined academic records, examination processes, teaching methods, available resources, and overall programme delivery. He added that the outcome of the exercise would help determine whether the institution has consistently maintained the standards required by the NBTE.
In an interview, the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Engr. Olumuyiwa Bamidele Ajayi, expressed confidence in the department’s preparedness for the full accreditation exercise. He stated that the department’s facilities had been thoroughly inspected and that both staff and students were adequately prepared for the assessment. He added that successful accreditation would further strengthen the department and encourage graduates to advance to Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.
Similarly, the Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Mr. Karimu O. Ayotunde, disclosed that the department had made adequate preparations ahead of the accreditation exercise. He explained that the availability of necessary resources and equipment would support the production of competent and professionally recognized graduates.
Mr Ayotunde also commended the institution’s management for providing the required support, including the procurement of modern equipment to enhance teaching and learning. According to him, several facilities supplied through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), including filling machines, stabilizers, and other laboratory equipment, have significantly improved academic activities within the department.
He further revealed that the NBTE team expressed satisfaction with the department’s facilities and approved two admission streams, allowing for a total of 80 students, with 40 students per stream. He added that the department is optimistic about expanding its capacity to three streams in the future.
As the accreditation exercise continues, heads of departments, lecturers, staff members, and students across the affected programmes remain hopeful of receiving favourable results from the NBTE assessment team. Further updates will be provided as the exercise progresses.
