The Students' Union Government (SUG) of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, on June 24, 2026, organized its maiden Inter-Faculty Debate Competition aimed at promoting intellectual engagement and balancing students' academic and social development.
The event, held at the institution, brought together students, lecturers, deans, student leaders, and other invited guests.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Rector, Dr. Lawson Olorunwa Sunday, commended the Students' Union Government for initiating the competition, describing it as a laudable effort towards enhancing academic excellence among students. He encouraged participants to remain focused on their educational pursuits while actively engaging in intellectual activities.
The 36th SUG President, Comrade Onile Olaniyi Mayowa, appreciated the institution's management for supporting the programme and urged students to participate actively in constructive discussions.
The debate was centred on the motion: "Student leadership has failed in protecting students' academic interests in Nigerian campuses." Representatives from various faculties presented arguments for and against the motion before a panel of judges.
At the end of the competition, the Faculty of Applied Sciences emerged overall winner with 70 points, while the Faculty of Business Studies secured second position with 65 points. The Faculty of Social Sciences came third with 58 points.
Other results showed that the Faculty of Engineering scored 50 points, while the Faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences recorded a tie with 45 points each.
Certificates of participation were presented to contestants, debate committee members, SUG executives, and representatives of the Students' Representative Council (SRC).
The competition was widely applauded by participants and guests as a platform for promoting critical thinking, public speaking, and intellectual discourse among students.
