Students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO) on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the sudden increase in transportation fares within the campus by commercial bikers operating in the institution.
The situation reportedly created tension among students in the early hours of the day, as many complained about being charged above the officially approved transport fare within the campus environment.
The incident drew the attention of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) following several complaints from students, including an encounter involving the Press Chairman and a campus biker in the presence of the SUG Vice President.
The growing reactions and complaints from students reportedly prompted the Students’ Union executives to convene an emergency meeting with representatives of the campus bikers to address the issue.
Following the meeting, the Students’ Union Government released an official notice clarifying that the approved transportation fare within the campus remains ₦200 and warned bikers against charging any amount above the stipulated fare.
The union further assured students that any future adjustment in transportation charges would be officially communicated through the appropriate channels.
Students were also advised to report any biker found violating the directive to the Students’ Union Government for necessary action.
The intervention by the SUG has since brought relief to many students who had earlier lamented the situation and called for immediate action.
