The newly appointed Acting Rector of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, Engr. (Dr.) Lawson Olorunwa Sunday, on Monday, April 27, 2026, addressed members of staff at the institution’s main gate, appealing for the resumption of academic activities amid the ongoing industrial action.
Speaking during the engagement, the Acting Rector urged staff members to return to duty in the interest of the students and the institution, assuring them of his commitment to engaging relevant government authorities to address the lingering issues.
He promised to facilitate discussions on the implementation of the minimum wage and the promotion of eligible staff members whose career advancement has been delayed.
According to eyewitness accounts, he emphasized the need for cooperation, noting that dialogue remains key to resolving the crisis affecting the Polytechnic.
In response, staff members maintained that their position remains unchanged, stressing that the restoration of their union rights is a primary condition for any meaningful engagement. They noted that the absence of a functional union structure has limited their ability to collectively decide on the next line of action.
The staff further explained that once the union is fully restored, it would enable them to convene a congress where decisions regarding the suspension or continuation of the industrial action would be made.
