The Press Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), has paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Head of Department (HOD) of Mass Communication and Press Patron, Dr. Afolayan Gabriel Sunday, who expressed appreciation for the visit and shared insights into his vision for the department.
Speaking during a brief interview, Dr. Afolayan gave thanks to God for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as the result of years of dedication and service to the institution. He noted that while the office of HOD is new to him, his experience within the department is extensive. He recalled serving as the first Examination Officer of the Department of Mass Communication and as both chairman and member of several institutional committees.
Dr. Afolayan disclosed that the department recently made history as the first in the institution to organise a comprehensive orientation programme for all students. The initiative, he explained, was aimed at educating students on departmental ethics, standards, and expectations. According to him, the programme received commendation from the Polytechnic management, as confirmed by the Rector’s representative during the event.
He further announced the introduction of a new disciplinary policy within the department, including a mandatory corporate dress code (black and white attire) on Mondays for both students and staff. He revealed that mobile phones were confiscated from some students who violated departmental regulations, stressing that discipline would be strictly enforced without exception. He warned that acts such as indecent dressing, dreadlocks, inappropriate hairstyles, bullying, sexual harassment, extortion, and other forms of misconduct would no longer be tolerated.
Addressing lingering rumours and negative perceptions about the department, Dr. Afolayan stated that a new chapter has begun. He emphasised that his administration is determined to change the narrative and ensure that discipline and professionalism define the department under his leadership.
On academic infrastructure, the HOD expressed concern over overcrowding in ND and HND classes, particularly the challenges faced by ND I students due to the ongoing renovation of the Millennium Building.
He assured students that the building would be reopened within the next two weeks. He also disclosed that he, alongside the Dean of Faculty, had met with the Rector to request the temporary use of an 800-seater hall to accommodate large classes, noting that discussions are ongoing.
Dr. Afolayan further addressed issues relating to the department’s large student population and visibility on campus. While acknowledging that the size of the department can attract undue attention, he defended its reputation, stating that many Mass Communication students are excelling academically and professionally. He assured that measures are being put in place to curb negative influences and strengthen the department’s image.
The Press Council expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible journalism, accurate reporting, and positive representation of the Department of Mass Communication.
