The Press Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, on February 12, 2026, held its annual Press Welcome Programme themed “Building Responsible Campus Journalists for the Future.”
The event brought together students, lecturers, invited dignitaries, and media professionals to formally welcome new members and reinforce the values of ethical campus journalism.
In his welcome address, the Press Chairman described the programme as more than a ceremonial gathering, noting that it marked a new beginning for both fresh and returning members. He emphasized that campus journalists are not merely writers but custodians of truth and the voice of the student body. He urged members to uphold discipline, teamwork, integrity, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The programme was attended by notable guests, including the Head of Department of Mass Communication and Press Patron, Dr. Afolayan Sunday; the Matron, Mrs. Adefemi; the Managing Director of RUGIPO 103.3FM, Mr. Ajayi; the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Oluibraimo Henry; Mr. Adeola; executives of NAMACOS; and COG executives, among others. The guests delivered goodwill messages and advised members to maintain high ethical standards while striving for academic excellence.
A keynote lecture on the theme was delivered by Mr. Ayodeji Adeoye, who spoke extensively on responsibility, credibility, and ethical conduct in journalism, particularly in the digital age. Mr. Adeola also encouraged participants to protect the reputation of the department and the institution through disciplined and professional conduct.
According to the organizers, the programme was designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to become responsible and effective journalists. It also marked the beginning of a series of activities aimed at promoting excellence, accountability, and innovation in campus media practice.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by members of the Press Council to uphold truth, integrity, and responsible reporting within the Polytechnic community.
