The Student Union Government (SUG) of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, has held a crucial meeting with the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to discuss the ongoing industrial action affecting academic activities at the institution.
In a statement addressed to students, the SUG leadership said the meeting was held in the presence of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties. Discussions focused on the strike action at the polytechnic and other issues affecting the academic progress and welfare of students.
During the meeting, Governor Aiyedatiwa reportedly clarified issues surrounding outstanding salary arrears owed to lecturers, explaining that his administration had already paid eight months out of the eleven months inherited from the previous government. He assured the student leaders that the remaining three months would be settled soon, adding that he had directed the Commissioner for Finance to expedite the process to ensure prompt payment.
The governor also addressed concerns regarding the implementation of the new national minimum wage, noting that certain administrative and procedural processes must be completed before full implementation. However, he assured the union that his administration is committed to resolving the issue and achieving a sustainable solution.
The SUG leadership used the opportunity to present the concerns and expectations of students, stressing the need for urgent action to resolve the industrial dispute and restore normal academic activities in the institution. Governor Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the concerns and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring stability and progress within the polytechnic.
Following the meeting, the student union urged students to remain calm and law-abiding while discussions continue with relevant stakeholders. The union also assured the student body that it remains committed to protecting the academic interests and welfare of all students.
The SUG further promised to keep students informed as new developments emerge regarding efforts to resolve the crisis and restore normal academic activities at the institution.
