The Student Union Government (SUG) of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government to resolve the ongoing strike action that has disrupted academic activities in the institution.
The student body expressed concern that the industrial action has left many students stranded, while academic activities remain suspended.
The SUG leadership explained that it had earlier adopted a peaceful and responsible approach by engaging relevant authorities in dialogue. According to the statement, the union held a round-table meeting on Monday with the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Union Matters, during which assurances were reportedly given that the strike would be called off on or before Wednesday.
However, the student body lamented that as of the time the memorandum was issued, there had been no visible sign of the resumption of academic activities, nor any official communication confirming concrete steps toward resolving the crisis. The union warned that the continued delay suggests the matter may not be receiving the urgency it deserves.
While reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, the SUG emphasized that its struggle for students’ welfare is guided by the principles of the three Cs - Consultation, Consolidation, and Confrontation. The union stated that after exhausting the first two stages in good faith, it may be compelled to take further action if the situation remains unresolved.
The student leadership therefore called on the Ondo State Government to ensure that the strike is called off and academic activities resume within the next 48 hours. It warned that failure to meet the demand could lead to lawful and coordinated actions by students to press home their demands.
The memorandum concluded with the union’s solidarity slogan, “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta,” reaffirming the determination of students to restore normal academic activities at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic.
