The Student Union Government (SUG) of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, on Monday held a meeting with faculty and departmental presidents to address concerns arising from the ongoing staff protest at the institution.
The meeting, which brought together SUG executives and student leaders across faculties and departments, focused on the impact of the protest on academic activities. Students reportedly expressed concerns over increased transportation costs, stress, and the disruption of lectures following the blockade at the institution’s main gate.
Addressing the gathering, the SUG leadership urged students to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that no official strike has been declared on campus. The union emphasized that academic activities have not been formally suspended and cautioned students against acting on unverified information.
The SUG further stated that it is closely monitoring developments and awaiting the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) regarding the ongoing protest. According to the union, consultations and engagements are ongoing to ensure that the interests of both staff and students are protected.
The student leaders, however, warned that if ASUP eventually declares a strike, the SUG, in collaboration with other campus executives, will take appropriate action, including organizing a peaceful protest to press the government to address the staff’s demands.
While reaffirming their support for legitimate welfare concerns, the SUG maintained that students are opposed to any prolonged strike, noting that further disruption of academic activities would negatively affect students’ academic progress.
The union reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students’ interests while advocating dialogue and a timely resolution of the issues.
