Murmurs erupted among students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), particularly freshers and returning students, following a sensitisation and warning exercise conducted by the Student Union Government (SUG) at the school gate on Monday, January 12, 2026, over issues relating to indecent dressing.
Some students complained that they were stopped at the gate and cautioned about their mode of dressing, a development that raised concerns across the campus. The situation generated widespread discussions among students, especially on various student platforms, regarding the approach adopted by the union.
Clarifying the situation, the SUG stated that no student was sent back home or penalised during the exercise. According to the union, the action was strictly aimed at creating awareness and issuing warnings to students who dressed indecently, while urging them to dress appropriately during subsequent visits to the campus.
In a brief interview with the press, the 36th Vice President of the Student Union Government, Comrade Oge Temitope Florence, popularly known as Mama Tee, advised students to comply with the institution’s dress code. She assured students that the union’s intention was corrective rather than punitive, adding that cooperation from the student body would result in positive behavioural change on campus.
She further explained that the exercise followed a memo earlier circulated across all student platforms on Sunday, January 11, 2026. The memo emphasised that decent dressing is not intended to restrict students’ freedom but to promote self-respect and respect for the academic community. It also listed prohibited dress styles, including revealing outfits, dreadlocks, coloured hair, ripped jeans, leg chains, shorts, sleeveless tops, skirts above the knee, among others.
