The management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), has formally inaugurated the newly elected officials of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Executives of the Male and Female Halls of Residence for the 2025/2026 academic session. The ceremony was held at the Adekunle Ajasin Auditorium.
The inauguration marked the official transfer of authority to the new leadership, who were democratically elected through the e-voting system—the seventh of its kind in the history of SUG elections in the institution. The election, conducted on November 7, was widely adjudged to be credible, free, fair, and transparent.
The event attracted principal officers of the polytechnic, academic and non-academic staff, past SUG leaders, members of various departmental associations, and a large number of students who gathered to witness the historic transition.
In his welcome address, the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. H. M. Olubraimoh, charged the newly inaugurated student leaders to live up to their campaign promises.
> “As you take the mantle of leadership today, put into practice all the leadership tips you canvassed during the manifesto night and make your tenure a fruitful one,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address, the Acting Rector, Dr. Adegun O. S., congratulated the new executives and described the occasion as more than a ceremonial transition.
> “Today’s ceremony signifies more than a change of leadership; it represents the renewal of our shared commitment to student leadership, participatory governance, and the continuous development of our institution,” he stated.
He urged the officers to always remember that leadership is a call to service, noting that their positions are opportunities to serve with dedication and zeal those who elected them. He further assured that the management remains committed to supporting the student leadership in upholding peace, discipline, and academic excellence.
The newly inaugurated SUG President, Comrade Onile Olaniyi Mayowa, popularly known as Ola the Fountain Boy, expressed profound gratitude to the school management and all distinguished guests for the confidence reposed in him.
In his acceptance speech, he pledged that his administration would open new streams of opportunities, restore students’ confidence, promote unity, and create a campus where every Rugipolite feels seen, heard, and valued. He also called for unity among students, regardless of department, religion, or tribe, emphasizing that:
> “We are one family, one RUGIPO, one destiny, one rising fountain.”
With the swearing-in concluded, the 36th SUG administration is expected to commence full operations immediately, as students expressed optimism that the new leadership will deliver meaningful projects and effectively represent their interests.
