Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, officially inaugurated its 35th elected Student Union Government (SUG) today at the institution’s 800-seater auditorium.
The event marked a significant milestone for the Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC) and the student body, reaffirming the democratic process that allows students to elect their representatives.
During the ceremony, the Acting Rector, Mr. Olarewaju Adegun, congratulated the new SUG executives and urged them to lead with integrity and serve as role models for the student community. He also highlighted the institution’s ongoing conversion process and expressed appreciation to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for addressing funding challenges faced by the polytechnic.
Adegun reiterated the school’s zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, theft, and other forms of misconduct, warning that students found guilty of such offenses would face rustication.
In his address, the newly elected SUG President, Aigbodion Thompson Shane, appealed to the school management to prioritize the renovation of both male and female toilets, particularly the male restroom near the road. He also suggested that the unused NYSC restroom be repurposed to enhance accessibility and hygiene for students.
Additionally, he raised concerns about the high cost and limited coverage of the campus WiFi, currently priced at ₦13,500, which many students find financially burdensome. He proposed reducing the fee to ₦8,000 to ensure affordability and fair value for students.
Shane also emphasized the urgent need to address issues surrounding student identification cards, noting that many students had been unable to complete the capturing process in the previous session.
He urged his fellow executives to embrace a new era of responsibility, emphasizing that they must fully commit to their duties and not take their roles lightly. Concluding his speech, he encouraged students to be good ambassadors of the institution.
The oath of office was administered by Barrister Kayode, followed by an address from the Social Director. The President then made his first appointment, and Mr. Elebute presented certificates to the newly elected executives.
