Indefatigable pen pushers who have carved niche for themselves in the print and broadcast media have converged at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), on the occasion of her ‘Pen Week’, on 28th Jan, 2022 organised by the institution’s Press Council, which is a chapter of the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalist, NUCJ.
This Year’s Celebration is themed: INTEGRATION OF MASS MEDIA FOR HIGHER INSTITUTIONS AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
In an interview with newsmen, General Manager Breez 91.9 FM, Basorun Banjo Abitogun advised Mass Communicators to abstain from reflecting their sentiments and emotions in their line of duty.
According to him, journalists must carry out their assignments professionally, not to incur detrimental consequences, he also highlighted that the receiving of brown envelop (bribe) have affected the objectivity of the profession.
Head of Operations Crest 106.1 FM, Mr Adeolu Gboyega urged Mass Communication Students to ensure they flow with the trend in the media, noting that the present radio and television production is way different from what it used to be.
Mr Gboyega said Mass Communicators are change makers, drive narratives, watch dog, influencers of decision making process of the masses, adding that they must understand the power they weld so as to effect a positive change in the society.
On his part, RUGIPO Dean Student’s affairs, Mr Henry Olu Braimoh commended the council for organising such educative programme for the student populace.
At the time of gathering this report, the Dean Student’s affairs also hinted that the 2020-2021 academic sessions’ second semester examination scheduled for the 7th of February will proceed as planned.
Earlier, the 2020/2021 chairman of the council, Olabayo Oladipupo in his welcome address urged the journalists present to all need to make amends where necessary during the lectures delivered by the guests invited for the occasion.
“... our guests were invited based on their seamless track records, hence, we all need to mend our broken fences, fill necessary lacuna, and fasten our belts of success” he said.
The press week also features the presentation of awards to not less than 20 individuals which includes: General Manager Breez 91.9 FM, Basorun Banjo Abitogun as best Broadcasting Manager in Ondo State, Head of operations Crest 106-1 FM, Mr Adeolu Gboyega as the best exemplary leader in media space in Ondo State, General manager RUGIPO 103.3 FM who is also the Head of Department Mass Communication department, RUGIPO, Mrs Adedowole Iyadunni Florence as the Ace of Initiative.
Award of Excellence was presented to Mr. Henry Olu Braimoh, RUGIPO Dean of Students' Affairs and Mr. O.M Oloye, RUGIPO Directorate of Students' Affairs, in recognition of their outstanding dedication and commitment towards growth and progress of the council and outstanding dedication and commitment towards the growth and progress of the council respectively.
Merit awards were also presented to Breez fm’s David Fidelis for service to humanity in giving out in-depth, accurate and timely news reportage, Breez fm’s Comfort Omolafe as an Erudite newscaster & presenter of the year, Crest FM’s Eniola Olurankinse as an Eloquent On Air Personality in Ondo State, Similoluwa Stephen ’ as the best newscaster/presenter of the year, through his love fascinating programme 'logba Ife' on Crest 106.1 FM, RUGIPO FM’s Adeola Adekoya 'Award of recognition as the best motivational speaker of the year and among others.
