Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo , The Department of Mass Communication recently organised an orientation programme for newly admitted students, aimed at introducing them to the department’s policies, ethics, and institutional culture. The programme was coordinated under the leadership of the newly appointed Head of Department (HOD), Dr. Afolayan Gabriel Sunday, in collaboration with NAMACOS executives and departmental staff.



The event commenced with an opening prayer led by Mr. Ajayi, followed by the rendition of the National and Polytechnic Anthems, setting a solemn tone for the programme. The Rector was represented by Dr. Mrs. Ologunagba Modupe, while the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dean of Faculty, HOD, departmental staff, and NAMACOS executives were formally introduced to the students.


In his welcome address, Dr. Afolayan emphasised the importance of discipline, personal responsibility, and strict adherence to institutional regulations. He encouraged students to embrace a culture of excellence and uphold the values that define the department


Delivering remarks on behalf of the Acting Rector, Dr. Mrs. Ologunagba Modupe urged students to abstain from acts that could compromise their academic integrity and reputation. Similarly, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Oluibrahimo Henry, stressed the need for good conduct and dedication to academic pursuits.


The orientation featured an informative lecture on indecent dressing and examination malpractice delivered by the Dean of Faculty, Dr. Rahaman Abubakri. He advised students to maintain high moral and academic standards and encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities such as NELFUND to support their educational and professional development.

In another session, Mr. Oluwatayo Ajayi, General Manager of RUGIPO Radio and Examination Officer for the department, addressed students on examination ethics and academic integrity, outlining the consequences of misconduct and the importance of honesty in their academic journey.



Dr. Afolayan further spoke on the culture and expectations of the department, highlighting key principles for excellence and encouraging students to contribute positively to the growth and reputation of the department and the institution at large.



Addressing concerns about infrastructure, Dr. Oluibrahimo Henry appreciated students for their patience in attending lectures at the Millennium ABC Building and assured them that ongoing renovations would be completed before the end of the month. He expressed confidence that improved facilities would enhance the learning environment.



The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Franklin Olaleye, followed by a closing prayer by Dr. Abubakri.


The orientation successfully provided freshers with essential guidance on academic ethics, institutional culture, and departmental expectations, marking a strong beginning to the academic session and inspiring students toward responsible campus journalism and professionalism.
