Concerns have emerged among students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), particularly those vacating hostels, over difficulties in securing accommodation and safe places to keep their belongings following ongoing hostel renovation projects.
Addressing the situation in a brief interview, the Director of Students’ Affairs, Mr. Bayo Elebute, explained that the institution’s management is actively handling the matter. He disclosed that the hostel portal was opened on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with accommodation fees set at ₦10,000, noting that sections of both the male and female hostels are currently undergoing renovation.
Further findings by the Press revealed that renovation work is ongoing across the hostels. In an interview, the renovation contractors assured that work is progressing steadily and that all renovation activities are expected to be completed before the end of the month.
Speaking on the development, the 36th Vice President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Oge Temitope Florence, popularly known as Mama Tee, commended the renovation workers for their efforts. She disclosed that she visited the hostels on Sunday, January 11, 2026, expressed satisfaction with the level of work completed so far, and appealed to students to exercise patience as the renovation continues.
Also reacting, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Oluibarahimo Henry, appreciated students for their understanding and urged them to remain calm. He assured that the management of the institution, in collaboration with TETFUND, is working diligently to ensure that the renovated hostels meet acceptable standards.
Dr. Henry further clarified that the hostel portal is now open for students who have completed payment of their school fees to proceed with accommodation payments. He added that charges for renovated hostels may differ from those yet to be renovated, assuring students that both male and female hostels will be fully completed and ready for use soon.
